What is depression?

In short it is a label for a variety of symptoms including:

  •  A sad, depressed mood
  • Loss of interest & pleasure in normal activities
  • Disturbed sleep
  • A noticable change in activity level (either lethargic or agitated)
  • A change in appetite (weight gain or weight loss)
  • Loss of energy, fatigue
  • Feelings of worthlessness and guilt, self-blame
  • Difficulty in concentration, thinking and decisiveness
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

There are many types of depression and not all of them display the same symptoms, in some: bipolar disorder, for example the symptoms may be almost the opposite:

  •  increased level of activity, to an almost manic level – hence the old name of manic depression
  •  rapid speech
  •  The mind races – concentration is impossible and interrupted
  •  exaggerated self-esteem and self belief
  •  decreased need for sleep
  •  need to participate in risky, or self-destructive behaviour – use of alcohol, drugs, drive for extreme sports 

So if you, or someone close is suffering from depression or a depressive state of mind, what should you do? 

 There are many things you could do to help including:

  • Ask for help
  • Talk to them/someone
  • Listen actively to what they are saying
  • Seek medical help, if you are worried
  • Find self help

Often skilled strangers are in a better position to help than your loved ones, because they are impartial, there is no emotional attachment and they are not involved in your problems, they can provide the insight and assistance to turn your feelings around.  I can be your first step to ending your depression.
